WHAT PASSES THROUGH
What passes through Crossing borders, leaving the familiar behind and setting off to discover new places to call home for a while. Artists generally steer clear of preconceived notions, preferring novel works and ways of thinking about the future—often despite their fears and doubts. That is precisely why they’re the best suited to show us how to break down barriers and approach mobility. To share ideas that can pass through walls and spur fresh impetus in the political, ecological, architectural and social spheres. The participating artists have a connection with the trinational region and near-daily experience with how easy it is to cross these borders, which constitute dangerous, insurmountable obstacles in other parts of the world. Their works allow sounds, light and heat to flow from one space to another, turning walls into membranes. Curated and realised in collaboration with the Kunsthaus Baselland.

ZOODYSSÉE
Zoodyssée revisits the myth of Odysseus and unknown lands, through an environmental and animal lens. The eleven invited artists’ videos and installations span scientific ocean exploration, the history of botany, and the climate. The curatorial approach draws from Homer’s epic* and a futuristic fable by Stanley Kubrick.** Alongside the exhibition, the artist Vincent Chevillon has organized a series of three events combining performance and discussion, as part of a partnership with Haute École des Arts du Rhin and the Ports de Strasbourg on connections between art and science.

For what is socially recognized as work is polarizing – inherited wealth, precarious working conditions, unpaid care work, unequal distribution of (free) time and «to-do» lists, as well as neoliberal notions of diligence and laziness, all crisscross the debate.The artworks presented critically examine burn-out, digital labor, care work, pregnancy, environmental protection, and fair pay, forming a systemic critique that does not spare the art world. On 13 December, art+care invites you to SPARK THE FLAME! from 2 to 6.30 p.m. with artistic contributions on the theme of fire. At 3 p.m., the panel discussion "(Un)paid work in art – who bakes the cake?" begins with the Equality Office of Basel-Stadt.

ALLTAG STRÖMUNG NEUORDNUNG
For this year’s Regionale, Cargo Bar has extended an invitation to Vanessa Gageos and Yoshikazu Goulven Le Maître—two artists who share a love for reclaimed materials and waste from consumption cycles, which they transform into new poetic narratives. Some of the exhibited works are created in situ to dialogue with the unique atmosphere in the bar and its diverse audience. Gageos works with used materials, in this case old cables from the Basel-Stadt region used to craft organic arrangements, while Goulven Le Maître creates organic structures from everyday objects such as cables, textiles and metal boxes. The interplay between these two approaches led to installations in which energy, residual materials and space combine to form poetic tableaux.

Some flee there to escape the harshness of waking life, others seek opportunities to rethink the world. In dream life, time is stretched, borders are blurred, and rigid structures crumble. What does it take to change perspective? Perhaps only a willingness to recognize the potential for transformation that lies between the real and oneiric—an invitation to uncover the unexpected in daily life and reshape reality.

What remains of the archetypal small savers seeking advice from a suburban or village branch of their savings banks, which continue to close down their branches?

Gerda Maise is organizing and curating this year's Regionale 26 at FABRIKculture. Each artist has the opportunity to present their artistic work in one of the sub-spaces defined by three mobile spatial angles on all three levels: hanging, laying, placing. The spatial arrangement consists of three freely defined fields in which artists can play with their own artistic language. At the same time, connections can be made to the other individual playing fields in the space and in the interspaces. On one hand, the intention is to ask what art is and how it should appear in the exchange between the artists and with the audience. On the other hand, it is about establishing a dialogue with the greatest possible freedom between the different artistic languages, ideas, and point of views of the three regions in France, Germany and Switzerland.

FREQUENCY: DARK AND STORMY
Regionale 26 at HEK is devoted to the climate situation and taking a close look at the storm that is brewing. A menacing atmosphere looms over the exhibition space, with gales, rain, black clouds, thunder and lightning. The works presented emit frequencies attuned to this theme, both audibly in the form of sounds and vibrations, and metaphorically, in moods, resonances, and commentary on political and social issues. Low frequencies under 20 Hz, which are not perceptible to the ear but can be felt by the body, play a special role here. These infrasounds can be relaxing, but can also provoke an oppressive or anxiety-inducing sensation, to the point that they are sometimes described as “haunting.” Visitors encounter works that interweave weather phenomena and vibrations, experiencing the frequencies both acoustically and mentally.

Phantoms are unreal apparitions, illusions, or imagined bodily sensations. They have become a symbol of mystery and the unknown in various cultures. In medicine, a perception of sensation in an amputated limb is known as “phantom pain.” The Phantoms exhibition presents works that connect past and present in different ways, working with ghostly representations that include enigmatic ornaments, body imprints, clothes covers, and historical artefacts. Time is inscribed in the material, in our bodies and in our minds. A look back to the past allows us to imagine a future that defies conventional notions of normality and progress. Rather than provoke static moments and modes of contemplation, all the works remain flexible, temporary, and unpredictable. Welcome!

Sixteen artistic positions gather in a landscape shaped by a slow change, half-empty spaces and quiet distortions. The works share a muted intensity, the kind that lingers in backyards, waiting rooms, and late afternoons that feel too long. Somewhere in the background, a town slowly folds in on itself. The streetlights hum. A dog barks once, then stops. Something is always about to happen, but never arrives. Through gestures both subtle and strange, the works trace the textures of a place where habits settle, childhood fades, and change seeps in sideways. What remains is a feeling: Not quite melancholic, not quite surreal, just a little bit off.

US journalist Ezra Klein posits that attention has become a new currency. Once captured, it can be wielded to gain power and influence. We live in an ocean of bids for our attention: all the books ever written, all the music, images and films ever produced are always within our reach. We have to make choices amid this flood of content. Where do we direct our attention? Who or what do we give our time to? The title of the exhibition, “8ung,” is a play on the German word “Achtung” which pairs the idea of attention with the number eight (“Acht”). When rotated, the symbol becomes that of infinity, return, and the continual flow of life, but also the idea of a pause. The exhibition features works by artists who question the power of attention and its social repercussions, and seek out moments of conscious observation. Amid this flurry of stimuli, “8ung” invites us to focus our attention rationally.

In a synopsis for a film about a break-up, Michelangelo Antonioni wrote: “The film is the story of those five years and those five minutes. Its title could have been Don’t try to find me, her last words on the phone.” The exhibition borrows that title to explore various forms of withdrawal and strategies of rejection. These may consist of refusing fixed attributions and identities or attempting to break free from certain worldviews, behavioral patterns, or life circumstances, but also encompass states ranging from alienation to dissociation and depersonalization. How does one reject an interpellation? How does one reflect back a gaze? What comes after flight, withdrawal, and rejection? What new avenues can open up? The subjects in Such mich nicht are not to be found in the places where they are usually assigned. The exhibition also looks at spaces marked by absence, which—perhaps for that very reason—one cannot let go of.

Installed in spaces at La Kunsthalle and La Filature in Mulhouse, the exhibition was created to be presented in two chapters. The standardized, prepackaged environments in which we live are familiar and intimate, yet impenetrable. Industrialized society shrouds our domestic realities in anonymity and uniformity. By whom and of what are made the objects, surfaces and materials all around us, which we handle and use every day? The manufacture of daily life is now lost to view, in the hands of specialists. The capitalist economy has entrusted them with feeding us, sewing our clothes, building our homes, and taking care of our loved ones. As a result, we are forgetting the materiality that underpins our lives. How can we reconnect with this fading reality and rediscover it as an “environment in which humans coexist with other beings”?

Installed in spaces at La Kunsthalle and La Filature in Mulhouse, the exhibition was created to be presented in two chapters. The exhibition lends a voice to artists who have turned their focus to all the elements that make up ordinary spaces, taking inspiration from sociologist Geneviève Pruvost’s explorations in her book “Quotidien politique”, published by La Découverte in 2024. The artists practice a form of attention and renewed presence that avoids consumerist impulses. They delve into intuitive gestures, using current knowledge to probe traditional know-how by turning to the often-frugal materials available in their immediate living or work space. Their mindful experiences of everyday life confronting our vital needs become shared moments and a poetic exploration at the heart of living, while building upon this spirit of subsistence.

WHERE DO YOU FEEL YOU MOST BELONG
Who am I and where do I feel like I belong? What’s left when we’ve folded up the map? When roots become embedded in lava, when milk turns into soap and when memory is soaked up by fabric like a dye? This exhibition presents works from the trinational region in a space that is itself transitional, between body and language, inner world and portrait, fragment and trace. What is identity? A skin, a pattern, a children’s song? A place that one has never left? A few of the works feel their way forward by sketching, stacking and searching. Others speak from the void, from the imprint, or from a delicate balance on the verge of bursting into pieces. It’s a question of transience and persistence. In a place between desire and sediment, densification and disintegration, the exhibition tells of inner landscapes that no one traverses entirely alone. Where do you feel you most belong is not a closing remark, but an invitation. To question. To linger. And perhaps, at some point, to think to yourself, ”I’m not alone here.”

Open the curtains of the studio! Incidence of light, draught, breath. The clumsy block of genius, shaped by competition, the idea of intuition: blown over the doorstep. Potter wasps bring the river in. Between the planks, in folds, birch forests grow. The studio, the swamp: moistened. Strings to the paint cups! The noise combed for voices. Mirrored in parallel many times. Resonance. The world creeps in through the window, tentatively. Wonderful thicket. Spores rustle, awakened beneath dust. Soothing cooing of pigeons. Our exhibition is a call for exchange, cooperation, accomplicement, solidarity, division of labor, care. As encouragement. As security. In denial. As a swarm. Sisterhood with the audience. In classical cosmology, the world’s axis was the spinal column of reality, which connected Heaven, Earth, and Hell. In our current era of global crises and posthuman perspectives, this order of things has been undermined. The exhibition presents the world’s axis not as a vertical line, but as a constellation of potential orientations: relational, multipolar and polyphonic. This three-layer structure symbolizes humanity’s energy topography: at the bottom, the Earth, the body, and collective memory; in the middle, change, migration and rites of passage; and at the top, speculative spaces envisioning posthuman and techno-spiritual existence. Works by artists from Germany, Switzerland and France—sculptures, installations, paintings, audiovisual and site-specific pieces—create resonance chambers between nature and technology, memory and transgression, spirituality and corporality. Art appears here as a ritual and as a personal, community, and planetary transformation.

There is a long list of undertakings in which humans attempt mastery of nature: advanced technology, scientific research, genetic experiments, hybrid organisms, assisted reproduction, artificial life, and more.Who could have imagined that one day we would be eating big, juicy steaks and other barbecue delights produced by 3D printers? And much more besides. Just how far will Homo deus go, as the divide between humanity and nature continues to grow? The line between robot and human is already starting to blur. How do the artists exhibiting here approach the issue?
Sophie Benwell, Ruben Gray, Susi Hinz, Catalena Janitz and Camille Moulin create at the confluence of art, technology, nature and society. Their works give us a glimpse of how scientific discoveries might compromise our perception of what is human.

WHAT PASSES THROUGH
What passes through Crossing borders, leaving the familiar behind and setting off to discover new places to call home for a while. Artists generally steer clear of preconceived notions, preferring novel works and ways of thinking about the future—often despite their fears and doubts. That is precisely why they’re the best suited to show us how to break down barriers and approach mobility. To share ideas that can pass through walls and spur fresh impetus in the political, ecological, architectural and social spheres. The participating artists have a connection with the trinational region and near-daily experience with how easy it is to cross these borders, which constitute dangerous, insurmountable obstacles in other parts of the world. Their works allow sounds, light and heat to flow from one space to another, turning walls into membranes. Curated and realised in collaboration with the Kunsthaus Baselland.

ZOODYSSÉE
Zoodyssée revisits the myth of Odysseus and unknown lands, through an environmental and animal lens. The eleven invited artists’ videos and installations span scientific ocean exploration, the history of botany, and the climate. The curatorial approach draws from Homer’s epic* and a futuristic fable by Stanley Kubrick.** Alongside the exhibition, the artist Vincent Chevillon has organized a series of three events combining performance and discussion, as part of a partnership with Haute École des Arts du Rhin and the Ports de Strasbourg on connections between art and science.

For what is socially recognized as work is polarizing – inherited wealth, precarious working conditions, unpaid care work, unequal distribution of (free) time and «to-do» lists, as well as neoliberal notions of diligence and laziness, all crisscross the debate.The artworks presented critically examine burn-out, digital labor, care work, pregnancy, environmental protection, and fair pay, forming a systemic critique that does not spare the art world. On 13 December, art+care invites you to SPARK THE FLAME! from 2 to 6.30 p.m. with artistic contributions on the theme of fire. At 3 p.m., the panel discussion "(Un)paid work in art – who bakes the cake?" begins with the Equality Office of Basel-Stadt.

For this year’s Regionale, Cargo Bar has extended an invitation to Vanessa Gageos and Yoshikazu Goulven Le Maître—two artists who share a love for reclaimed materials and waste from consumption cycles, which they transform into new poetic narratives. Some of the exhibited works are created in situ to dialogue with the unique atmosphere in the bar and its diverse audience. Gageos works with used materials, in this case old cables from the Basel-Stadt region used to craft organic arrangements, while Goulven Le Maître creates organic structures from everyday objects such as cables, textiles and metal boxes. The interplay between these two approaches led to installations in which energy, residual materials and space combine to form poetic tableaux.

DREAMS:WORK A vessel filled with images, voices and fragments of reality. Candles that gradually change shape as they burn. A corner that both marks a boundary within and awakens curiosity about what lies beyond. Everything is already in place, but a change of perspective is needed to set the metamorphosis in motion. What appears rigid begins to soften, to shift, to take on new forms. Dreams function like secret workshops, warping reality and converting it into scenes that can be both utopian and nightmarish. Some flee there to escape the harshness of waking life, others seek opportunities to rethink the world. In dream life, time is stretched, borders are blurred, and rigid structures crumble. What does it take to change perspective? Perhaps only a willingness to recognize the potential for transformation that lies between the real and oneiric—an invitation to uncover the unexpected in daily life and reshape reality.

What remains of the archetypal small savers seeking advice from a suburban or village branch of their savings banks, which continue to close down their branches?

Gerda Maise is organizing and curating this year's Regionale 26 at FABRIKculture. Each artist has the opportunity to present their artistic work in one of the sub-spaces defined by three mobile spatial angles on all three levels: hanging, laying, placing. The spatial arrangement consists of three freely defined fields in which artists can play with their own artistic language. At the same time, connections can be made to the other individual playing fields in the space and in the interspaces. On one hand, the intention is to ask what art is and how it should appear in the exchange between the artists and with the audience. On the other hand, it is about establishing a dialogue with the greatest possible freedom between the different artistic languages, ideas, and point of views of the three regions in France, Germany and Switzerland.

FREQUENCY: DARK AND STORMY
Regionale 26 at HEK is devoted to the climate situation and taking a close look at the storm that is brewing. A menacing atmosphere looms over the exhibition space, with gales, rain, black clouds, thunder and lightning. The works presented emit frequencies attuned to this theme, both audibly in the form of sounds and vibrations, and metaphorically, in moods, resonances, and commentary on political and social issues. Low frequencies under 20 Hz, which are not perceptible to the ear but can be felt by the body, play a special role here. These infrasounds can be relaxing, but can also provoke an oppressive or anxiety-inducing sensation, to the point that they are sometimes described as “haunting.” Visitors encounter works that interweave weather phenomena and vibrations, experiencing the frequencies both acoustically and mentally.

PHANTOMS
Phantoms are unreal apparitions, illusions, or imagined bodily sensations. They have become a symbol of mystery and the unknown in various cultures. In medicine, a perception of sensation in an amputated limb is known as “phantom pain.” The Phantoms exhibition presents works that connect past and present in different ways, working with ghostly representations that include enigmatic ornaments, body imprints, clothes covers, and historical artefacts. Time is inscribed in the material, in our bodies and in our minds. A look back to the past allows us to imagine a future that defies conventional notions of normality and progress. Rather than provoke static moments and modes of contemplation, all the works remain flexible, temporary, and unpredictable. Welcome!

AFTER THE AFTERNOON
Sixteen artistic positions gather in a landscape shaped by a slow change, half-empty spaces and quiet distortions. The works share a muted intensity, the kind that lingers in backyards, waiting rooms, and late afternoons that feel too long. Somewhere in the background, a town slowly folds in on itself. The streetlights hum. A dog barks once, then stops. Something is always about to happen, but never arrives. Through gestures both subtle and strange, the works trace the textures of a place where habits settle, childhood fades, and change seeps in sideways. What remains is a feeling: Not quite melancholic, not quite surreal, just a little bit off.

US journalist Ezra Klein posits that attention has become a new currency. Once captured, it can be wielded to gain power and influence. We live in an ocean of bids for our attention: all the books ever written, all the music, images and films ever produced are always within our reach. We have to make choices amid this flood of content. Where do we direct our attention? Who or what do we give our time to? The title of the exhibition, “8ung,” is a play on the German word “Achtung” which pairs the idea of attention with the number eight (“Acht”). When rotated, the symbol becomes that of infinity, return, and the continual flow of life, but also the idea of a pause. The exhibition features works by artists who question the power of attention and its social repercussions, and seek out moments of conscious observation. Amid this flurry of stimuli, “8ung” invites us to focus our attention rationally.

WHAT PASSES THROUGH
What passes through Crossing borders, leaving the familiar behind and setting off to discover new places to call home for a while. Artists generally steer clear of preconceived notions, preferring novel works and ways of thinking about the future—often despite their fears and doubts. That is precisely why they’re the best suited to show us how to break down barriers and approach mobility. To share ideas that can pass through walls and spur fresh impetus in the political, ecological, architectural and social spheres. The participating artists have a connection with the trinational region and near-daily experience with how easy it is to cross these borders, which constitute dangerous, insurmountable obstacles in other parts of the world. Their works allow sounds, light and heat to flow from one space to another, turning walls into membranes. Curated and realised in collaboration with Atelier Mondial.

Imagine a world after humanity—mutants, machines, and strange organisms building uncanny alliances in the ruins of our civilization.
CREATURES COMFORT playfully envisions this future, where bots and life forms thrive amidst the debris, exposing the absurdity of human excess while hinting at renewal. Hosted on KUNSTSURFER, the exhibition hijacks digital ad spaces, turning the web into a portal to the uncanny. Familiar content lingers as nostalgic camouflage, while emerging artworks reveal humor, hope, and resilience in the aftermath of collapse.

In a synopsis for a film about a break-up, Michelangelo Antonioni wrote: “The film is the story of those five years and those five minutes. Its title could have been Don’t try to find me, her last words on the phone.” The exhibition borrows that title to explore various forms of withdrawal and strategies of rejection. These may consist of refusing fixed attributions and identities or attempting to break free from certain worldviews, behavioral patterns, or life circumstances, but also encompass states ranging from alienation to dissociation and depersonalization. How does one reject an interpellation? How does one reflect back a gaze? What comes after flight, withdrawal, and rejection? What new avenues can open up? The subjects in Such mich nicht are not to be found in the places where they are usually assigned. The exhibition also looks at spaces marked by absence, which—perhaps for that very reason—one cannot let go of.

LE SOUFFLE DE LA SUBSISTANCE
Installed in spaces at La Kunsthalle and La Filature in Mulhouse, the exhibition was created to be presented in two chapters. The standardized, prepackaged environments in which we live are familiar and intimate, yet impenetrable. Industrialized society shrouds our domestic realities in anonymity and uniformity. By whom and of what are made the objects, surfaces and materials all around us, which we handle and use every day? The manufacture of daily life is now lost to view, in the hands of specialists. The capitalist economy has entrusted them with feeding us, sewing our clothes, building our homes, and taking care of our loved ones. As a result, we are forgetting the materiality that underpins our lives. How can we reconnect with this fading reality and rediscover it as an “environment in which humans coexist with other beings”?

LE SOUFFLE DE LA SUBSISTANCE
Installed in spaces at La Kunsthalle and La Filature in Mulhouse, the exhibition was created to be presented in two chapters. The exhibition lends a voice to artists who have turned their focus to all the elements that make up ordinary spaces, taking inspiration from sociologist Geneviève Pruvost’s explorations in her book “Quotidien politique”, published by La Découverte in 2024. The artists practice a form of attention and renewed presence that avoids consumerist impulses. They delve into intuitive gestures, using current knowledge to probe traditional know-how by turning to the often-frugal materials available in their immediate living or work space. Their mindful experiences of everyday life confronting our vital needs become shared moments and a poetic exploration at the heart of living, while building upon this spirit of subsistence.

WHERE DO YOU FEEL YOU MOST BELONG
Who am I and where do I feel like I belong? What’s left when we’ve folded up the map? When roots become embedded in lava, when milk turns into soap and when memory is soaked up by fabric like a dye? This exhibition presents works from the trinational region in a space that is itself transitional, between body and language, inner world and portrait, fragment and trace. What is identity? A skin, a pattern, a children’s song? A place that one has never left? A few of the works feel their way forward by sketching, stacking and searching. Others speak from the void, from the imprint, or from a delicate balance on the verge of bursting into pieces. It’s a question of transience and persistence. In a place between desire and sediment, densification and disintegration, the exhibition tells of inner landscapes that no one traverses entirely alone. Where do you feel you most belong is not a closing remark, but an invitation. To question. To linger. And perhaps, at some point, to think to yourself, ”I’m not alone here.”

In classical cosmology, the world’s axis was the spinal column of reality, which connected Heaven, Earth, and Hell. In our current era of global crises and posthuman perspectives, this order of things has been undermined. The exhibition presents the world’s axis not as a vertical line, but as a constellation of potential orientations: relational, multipolar and polyphonic. This three-layer structure symbolizes humanity’s energy topography: at the bottom, the Earth, the body, and collective memory; in the middle, change, migration and rites of passage; and at the top, speculative spaces envisioning posthuman and techno-spiritual existence. Works by artists from Germany, Switzerland and France—sculptures, installations, paintings, audiovisual and site-specific pieces—create resonance chambers between nature and technology, memory and transgression, spirituality and corporality. Art appears here as a ritual and as a personal, community, and planetary transformation.

There is a long list of undertakings in which humans attempt mastery of nature: advanced technology, scientific research, genetic experiments, hybrid organisms, assisted reproduction, artificial life, and more.Who could have imagined that one day we would be eating big, juicy steaks and other barbecue delights produced by 3D printers? And much more besides. Just how far will Homo deus go, as the divide between humanity and nature continues to grow? The line between robot and human is already starting to blur. How do the artists exhibiting here approach the issue?
Sophie Benwell, Ruben Gray, Susi Hinz, Catalena Janitz and Camille Moulin create at the confluence of art, technology, nature and society. Their works give us a glimpse of how scientific discoveries might compromise our perception of what is human.
